Fall Class Work 2011

This semester I took two art classes, Intermediate Drawing and Intermediate Animation. Here's a collection of work from both classes.
The big project this year was to design a forest inspired by Midsummer Night's Dream. We were required to create both a day time and enchanted night forest. Many steps went into creating the final paintings, such as thumbnailing and small comps, a pencil line drawing, a pencil rendering and color comps.

Spring Semester Work

Major works and projects from 113a and 112b at San Jose State.
Line drawing for the city scape. I like this a lot more than the final result.
The final painting, done in gouache, by far the most difficult medium I've encountered in my life.
Color comps also done in gouache at a much smaller size than the final painting. These are the best results out of the 12 we did.
Figure studies, primarily 5-10 minutes, done in pencil or ball point pen.

Passed my Portfolio Review!

The A/I department finally posted the results for the portfolio review yesterday. All the main characters passed! We spent the rest of the day celebrating.

This is all the work I submitted. Some of it's been posted here before but I'm including it for the sake of reference for other people.

Holy hell has it been a hectic couple of months. Wondercon, applying to internships, portfolio review, piles and piles of homework... Anyways, here's a couple things.
Two of my favorite gunslingers, Clint Eastwood and Han Solo.
Flexing my character designin muscles by drawing some humanized Pokemon (Gen 5) Left to right is Reuniclus, Emboar and Blitzle. I want to do more of these.
Marceline from Adventure Time because she's the best vampire of them all.
5 Personas. My actual self in cartoon form, Dinolich, Dekay (of Darkness and Dekay) and my duuurrrsona, Chuck who is an aye-aye/anglerfish.
Nother Dinolich, I'm not terribly fond of this one but I remember it getting me out of an art funk so it's noteworthy.
New deviantart ID for a Dekay that's in a much better place than she was a few months ago, with a much cooler haircut.

I should be finding out if I passed the portfolio review by the end of the week, so once I find out I'll post my submission!

These two months were probably the most mentally and physically draining months of my life, I'm lucky I got any art done!
I had to put my game face on.

Perspective Sketches

My intermediate illustration class was assigned 4 perspective drawings from observation using the information we learned in class. I spent roughly 1.5-3 hours on each of these and sat at the tops of a couple buildings to draw these. They provided quite the challenge and I learned a lot about drawing perspective in the process as made sense of some of the techniques from class.

Fanime

Yesterday I played Finn in a skit for an event hosted by the Shrunken Headman Club (animation club at SJSU). I got a lot of compliments on how well I portrayed the character. Little do they know that's just how I act on a regular basis.

To start off this post we have the complete set of 100 sketch commissions. I'm pretty excited to finish these.

Second we have two birthday drawings for friends!
This first one is Zach's Safari Party, where nothing is to scale and party favors are required. For my good friend Zach's 21st birthday a couple days ago.
Ki-Chan is the level-headed veteran, who has been on the force for years. She's seen things you wouldn't believe, but she knows how to take down the criminals. Dekay is the new blood with a hot temper and something to prove. They must overcome their differences and work together to take down alien drug circles, rampaging robots and jay walkers.
This one was for 's 22nd birthday.

Only a couple more day's till my own birthday :D

Marchish

a bunch of random sketches from the last monthish.
Some concept sketches for a drawing I wanted to do. I was gonna do a trashy hipster party version of Peter Pan. Up top is Wendy and her brother Paul (going off characters from the Disney version), below is Tiger Lily and Peter Pan himself. Ultimately I would want Hook, the crocodile, Wendy's youngest brother and a bunch of the lost boys. I just don't know when I'll have time for something this big.
A bunch of silly little yetis (and Sherlock Hogs) that I want to finish up and sell art card prints of at Fanime next month.

Vikings and Dragons

As of Friday I have seen How to Train Your Dragon twice, I was lucky enough to score a free screening through the animation department through my school. I gotta say, Dreamworks is really stepping up their game. This was as good as any Pixar movie out there and probably one of the few films where the 3D really enhanced the film instead of hindered or was simply an added bonus. The plot was solid and didn't seem forced at all, the lack of pop culture references was a breath of fresh air and they successfully created a believable world with beautifully designed characters, creatures and environments. Even the flight sequences with Hiccup and Astrid were surprisingly original and not too "A Whole New World"sy.
After flipping through the art book, Nico Marlet, the character designer for the film quickly became one of my favorite artists. I don't know how he's slipped under my radar all these years, after doing my research I've discovered he's been responsible for the designs of a lot of my favorite Dreamworks characters. The man really knows what he's doing and major props for creating such a wide range of characters for the film.

So this is a viking-self portrait inspired by all of Marlet's concept sketches. I really can't wait to get my own copy of the art book.
I really want to do some fun fan art of Toothless with some of the viking kids, so here's some practice sketches.

Little Red Amongst Other Things

A mondernized Little Red Ridding Hood that I finished recently, I take a lot of time on my linework and it doesn't always go noticed.
The finished result. The image ended up being an experiment with color, no blacks or greys were used to create this illustration.
I've been trying to embellish my cell shading, doing simple things in photoshop is getting easier.
A revamp of a character in the Three Cheers cast.

This was kind of weird to draw because it started out in my sketchbook. It was way too messy to ink and markers would have killed the paper and my lightbox is at school. So I actually inked this digitally and colored a printout on cardstock.

It turns out I don't actually have the time to draw for myself this month like I had hoped but I'll be damned if I'm not going to try and cram as much as I can in between homework and commissions.

Not a WIP, but still awesome. I some how found the time to knock out some art cards of my personal characters. These are for sale on Deviantart. First come first serve.
Some progress from my last post here! Again this is Sue Denim and Dee Plume of the Euro-Electro band, Robots in Disguise. Since I posted the inks, I've fixed some anatomy errors and added color. I need to add some graphics and a logo to it. I'm going for a poster type look. Hopefully I find time to finish it soon.
I'm gonna try to scan my progress on this so I can show people my process. People like that kind of thing. Group shot of Izzy, Grenadine and Benji. Started out as a really messy rough sketch in my sketchbook. Focusing mostly on their gesture first and adding the characters over that.
The sketch was waaaay messier than my usual work so I busted out the lightbox and transfered my sketch over to a clean sheet of cardstock. Once I had some clean pencils changing some minor details, I inked right on top of the new sketch, erasing it with a white pencil. It's ready for coloring, which I'll hopefully remember the scan the stages.

I don't know when I'll ever be able to finish this, (definitely not any time soon) so I might as well share the lineart. I'm a huge fan of the electro band, Robots in Disguise, some of you may know them as the Electro/Goth Girls from The Mighty Boosh. They're a pretty crackin' band and you should give them a listen even if you don't watch the Boosh.

On the left is Sue Denim and the right is Dee Plume, I drew this with the intention of throwing some neons into my life after drawing nothing but gloomy things. Unfortunately I haven't had a change to use those neons. Oh well, I'll get to it eventually.

Color test for Darkness and Dekay, I might make Dekay's hair blue instead of blonde. Though it doesn't really matter since the comic is in black and white.

Jazz Maverick Progression

I posted the lines to this yesterday but I'm including them again as a comparison to the finished result.
Threw down the flat colors and some preliminary shading to the characters before tackling a backdrop.
A few hours and multiple dead markers later we have the finished result!
This might be my favorite Mighty Boosh piece so far. I'm really happy with the color choices and how the expression on Howard's face turned out. I can't wait to show this to them next week!

Gasmask Progress

Posted this sketch in the last blog, but I've worked on it a little more.
This....was an experiment gone weird. I tried coloring it without lineart which isn't something I've done before, but didn't finish it all the way because I didn't like my color choices. It looks too much like a cybergoth alien instead of an apocalyptic demon which is what I'm going for. But anyways, since I'd already fucked the colors I figured it be good drawing to trying inking with a brush an india ink. Its a lot harder than I had anticipated and it probably would have helped if I had a cup of water with me to keep the bristles together. So we'll try this again on a different day. Still looks kinda neat.
Spent some extra time making my lines look really interesting and I think I'm going to try using tans, french greys, and purples for this.

New business card! With updated email and blogspot.
Making some changes to DeKay, which I've kinda wanted to do for a while. The first is a weird hyena/aye-aye hybrid that I might draw at some point but ultimately I decided just to switch up her markings a bit and make her full raccoon instead of a weird cool/wolf hybrid thing.
Monster doodle based on some commission specs my friend Nanuka (nanuka.deviantart.com) received. Just for fun.
I felt like drawing a gasmask and this is what spawned. I tried a new coloring method on it but I killed it with a color pallet I ended up not liking. Thank god I scanned the sketch so I can try again.
WhiskeyTown (furaffinity.net/user/whiskeytown) has an awesome species called landsharks so I HAD to draw DeKay as one.

Based on a discussion I had with my friend Christian about Dawn of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You really can't like that character unless you're also an annoying sibling. Being indifferent is okay though.

Wow I haven't updated this thing in ages. I think from now on I'm just going to upload whatever I have sketches or finished at the end of every week or something like that. In the mean time, here's some of my more recent stuff.

An accurate portrayal of myself after Wondercon weekend.
I'm about half way through season 3 of Doctor Who and I'm REALLY enjoying it. I just wish I had time to watch the rest.
The three main characters from a comic I need to finish by the 15th. Nearly done, the last three pages need lettering and the cover needs finishing.
The finished result from the sketch in the last post. I really like it, except for the lack of any light source. That's what I get for coloring at weird hours of the night.

Two of my friends drew themselves as Pokemon Trainers so I decided to join in on the fun.
One of the rare times I actually scan my lines before coloring.

I tried to color this digitally only to remember I fail pretty hardcore at photoshoop and i just used my markers and slapped on a background.

SORRY FOR MY COMPLETE LACK OF UPDATES. I haven't been sketching at all these days.

Day 9: Art Final I had to finish this and didn't have time for any other art. But whatever the whole point of this is just to draw everyday.
We had to make a book of drawings inspired by this really crappy museum. I just made monstery versions of the taxidermied animals.

I never remember to scan my progress. But here's one I did for a friend's birthday over a month ago.

Had to come up with a personal symbol for my art class. I ended up going with the robot design. I'll post the final result when I get it back.

The other night I had a dream that SVA was not actual buildings, but a bus. It had kidnapped Zach before he could do his math homework and some how managed to eat Chris. I'm not entirely sure how that happened because it was a regular bus in the dream. I just drew it like this because it was funny.

I needed a new profile picture for my facebook and steampunk is fun.
Fucking awesome drawing of Mistah J. that I did in my math workbook. Out of all the joker drawings I've done this is my favorite. I managed to get the shape of the face right and the hair a lot better than I have before. Very proud of this and it was only meant to be a doodle. A very large doodle.
Sketching about during art one day. The girl next to me said she recognized Deziree, but she couldn't place where she saw her drawn and she didn't know who Zach was. What a crazy random happenstance.

I like this guy.
Snowkatt101's Shavo. I love her style and characters.
